WHAT MAKES A STAR NURSE?

Breaking Down the Criteria to Win Recognition in the Star Nurses Program
Of course you recognize when an RN goes the extra mile and really makes a difference. That’s what makes a Star Nurse, the premier event that recognizes leading nurses in the District, Maryland and Virginia. It happens every day, as nurses give so much of themselves to their patients and organizations.
All nurses are amazing, but Star Nurses are the best of the best, RNs that are doing extraordinary things for their patients and practices. Nurses like:
- Jaclyn Kenney, an RN at Nebraska Medical Center. Overproducing milk for her young daughter, she made the donation of a lifetime giving 1,000 oz. of her own breast milk to a mother of two with lymphoma and had to stop breastfeeding.
- Sandra Clarke, an RN at Sacred Heart Medical Center, who created the No One Dies Alone program in 2001, which provides for volunteers to stay with patients up to and during their final moments.
- Asma Inge-Hanif, director and co-Founder of IBM/Al-Nisaa Healthy Solutions Medical Center in San Diego, who has started countless initiatives to help underserved and forgotten populations.
There are countless others, each with their own incredible story. We bet you know a few, as well. Now’s the time to nominate them for the Star Nurse Campaign, the premiere event recognizing leading nurses in the Greater Washington (DMV) area.
SELECTION CRITERIA
For the Clinical Care Nurse category:
- Clinical skills
- Excellence in nursing care
- Compassion
- Collaboration with care coordination
- Relationship with the patient and his or her family/friends
- Positive community impact
- Positive impact on the nominator
- Providing patient safety
- Providing value to the patient
For the Administrative/Academic Nurse category:
- Administrative/academic skills
- Compassion
- Collaboration with colleagues and peers
- Contribution to the advancement of the nursing profession
- Relationships with patients and their families/friends
- Positive community impact
- Positive impact on the nominator
- Advocating on behalf of individuals or communities
- Providing value to nominator
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is partnering with The Washington Post to present Star Nurses, which recognizes and celebrates RNs practicing in Maryland, Virginia and the District. Nominations are welcome from patients, patient family members, peers, or members of the community.
Awards will be presented to two nurses from each state and DC at a live event on the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12, 2020. Nominations must be in by February 22, 2020.
